Launching of the website and opening of the Knowledge Centre of the Galle Heritage Foundation by Hon. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Minister of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage. The Knowledge Centre which is located in the ground floor of the GHF office complex comprises a library, book stall and internet browsing facility.

The inauguration of the Eye Donation Programme of the GHF at Sudharmalaya Buddhist temple, Galle Fort. Government officials and members of the community of Galle Fort participated.

Awarding of prizes and certificates to winners of the Dhamma Knowledge Contest for students of Dhamma Schools in the Galle area. The chief guest was Hon. Lionel Premasiri, Deputy Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare. The contest was jointly organized by the Shasanarakshaka Mandalaya of the Galle Four Gravets and the GHF. The Prize Awarding Ceremony was held at the GHF Auditorium.

The Award Distribution Ceremony of the Provincial Productivity Competition conducted by the National Productivity Secretariat was held at the auditorium of the Kalutara District Secretariat. The GHF was awarded a Certificate of Commendation. Its Chairman Mr. Parakrama Dahanayake, CEO Mr. H.L. Gunawardena and Productivity Officer Mrs. P.G.N. Chandimali received the Certificate from Hon. Athauda Seneviratne, Minister of Labour Relations and Manpower.

The National Literary Festival 2009 was held at the Royal College, Polonnaruwa. The GHF conducted a stall, depicting the Cultural and Architectural Heritage of Galle Fort. Handbills were distributed free of charge to all visitors.

Prizes to winners of the Home Garden Contest conducted by the GHF were distributed by the GHF Chairman Mr. Parakrama Dahanayake. The contest was conducted in two groups, viz., Homes and Institutions. The focus was on the use of urban home gardening techniques and cultivation sans chemical fertilizer and weed-killers and pesticides. First, second and third prizes and 10 consolation prizes were awarded in each group. In addition, a participation prize was given to each of the participants.

A meeting of the Welfare Society of Trishaw Operators of Galle Fort was held at the GHF auditorium at 2.30 p.m.

Mr. Wimal Rubasinghe, the newly appointed Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage, paid an informal visit to the office of the GHF. He met the staff of the GHF including the Chairman and CEO. He said that he would arrange a more formal discussion in due course.

Conservation work of the old Dutch Hospital building which now houses the office complex of the GHF was inaugurated by Madam Kumari Balasuriya, Governor of the Southern Province.
The President of ICOMAS Sri Lanka Prof. Samitha Manawadu and other Members of ICOMAS and the Chairman of the GHF also participated.
The project which is being handled by ICOMAS Sri Lanka is being funded by the American Express Bank through the World Monument Fund. |
